SUDAN RELIEF FUND
The Bishop Gassis Sudan Relief Fund was originally established with the purpose of supplying food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, and the Gospel of Christ to the people and children of Sudan. As of March 2004, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army has released hundreds of child soldiers from ages 10 to 17 who have been forcibly recruited to join at ages as early as 7 to 8 to join in the fighting. These children upon release had no family left to go back too or were not wanted after forcibly committing atrocities while serving as a child soldier. The Sudan Relief Fund helps in establishing aid in areas where child soldiers are a prominent number of the people being helped. Moving past the initial supplies and aid brought in, the Sudan Relief Fund then turns to help establish longer lasting ways to provide aid like building wells, constructing hospitals, bringing life-saving medicines, and constructing schools and education systems in the hopes of getting the former child soldiers and all other children affected by the conflict back to their education.
According to charitynavigator.com, in the December 2012 report, the Sudan Relief Fund’s revenue stood at $4,961,969 with almost all of the money coming from contributions, gifts, and grants and a small portion coming from “other revenue”. Of the organizations expenses, 69.1% is dedicated to programs ($2,384,136), 25.7% is dedicated to fundraising ($885,635), and 5.2% is dedicated to administrative services ($179,537). Their deficit, or excess for the year was $1,512,661 putting them at the highest deficit of the three organizations. The organization also narrowly takes first place in the order of how much revenue they bring in.
