SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGES
SOS Children’s Villages is an organization whose mission is to help children living in their villages through programs focused on education, family strengthening, medical, and outreach programs. They care for abandoned children, orphaned children, or children of families who are not fit to care for them. The organizations goal is to provide a home and experience for these children that will help them grow and flourish in a healthy way. The organization has almost 500 villages in 132 different countries. This is an organization that has an affect on many children who come from a large variety of backgrounds. In particular relation to this topic, this page will be focused on the villages that are directly influencing children who have been or have been affected by child soldiers.
SOS Children’s Villages use their programs mentioned above, to help save as well as rehabilitate child soldiers as well as children whose lives have been affected by the conflict. Currently, SOS Children is involved in many different countries where the fallout from child soldiers has been large. One of the largest areas of work is centered in Uganda working to help the victims of the fallout of the Lord’s Resistance Army and the seemingly endless war in northern Uganda. The SOS center located in Gulu currently supports over 250 children and child soldiers affected by the conflict providing them with counseling, and medical, nutritional and educational support. The counseling outreach program is strongly prevalent in the cases of child soldiers in the village. One of the long-term goals of the Village is to assist the children to become self-reliant, confident adults who will be able to care for their families in the future.
